The Scottish Affairs Committee would like to announce its fifth oral evidence session on:

Employment and skills for the defence industry in Scotland

Baroness Taylor is the Minister with specific responsibility for defence procurement and industrial policy. She will be accompanied by Dr Andrew Tyler, Director General Ships Defence Equipment and Support, and Amyas Morse, Defence Commercial Director, Ministry of Defence.

In July 2007 a £7.7bn increase in the defence budget over three years was announced. £3.8bn will be spent on two 65,000 tonne Royal Navy aircraft carriers. A significant proportion of the construction will take place in Scotland. The Secretary of State was reported as saying that the contract would support or create 10,000 jobs, including those at shipyards across the UK. Scotland also has an active aerospace industry. This evidence session will examine the impact of defence spending on skills and the workforce in Scotland and the future for the Scottish aerospace, defence and naval sector.
