Regulatory Reform Committee

Session 2002-03        6 March 2003

Proposal for the Regulatory Reform (British Waterways Board) Order 2003

On 13 January 2003, the Government laid before Parliament a proposal for the Regulatory Reform (British Waterways Board) Order 2003.  The purpose of the proposal is to amend the Transport Act 1962 and the Transport Act 1968 by adding to and clarifying the British Waterways Board's statutory powers.  The Government believes that this would enable British Waterways to participate fully in the Water Grid Public Private Partnership.

The Committee has invited both the responsible Minister, Rt Hon Alun Michael MP (Minister of State, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) and representatives of English Nature to appear before it to give oral evidence on the proposal.  The Committee is likely to address environmental concerns raised by English Nature and others in the course of the consultation process on the proposal.

The session will take place at 9.30 am on Tuesday 11th March in a Committee room in the Palace of Westminster. For further details, please contact the Committee staff on 020 7219 2837/2833.
