Regulatory Reform Committee

Session 2002-03            Friday 13 December 2002

Proposal for the Regulatory Reform (Assured Periodic Tenancies) (Rent Increases) Order 2003

The Committee has reported to the House that a draft order in the same terms as the proposal should be laid before the House.  The Committee seeks an assurance from the Minister, at the time at which the draft order is laid, relating to the estimates of costs or other benefits likely to arise from one particular aspect of the proposal.

The Government laid this proposal before Parliament on 16 October 2002, under the procedure laid down by the Regulatory Reform Act 2001.  The proposed Order would amend and simplify the existing procedure for assured periodic tenancies by allowing landlords to set a fixed day for rent increases.  The Committee considered this proposal in accordance with the criteria laid down in the Committee’s Standing Order.

The Committee’s Report on the proposal will be published at 2.00 pm on 17 December.  The Report (the Committee’s Third Report of Session 2002-03) will be available from all Stationery Office outlets (Ref HC 183).
