New inquiry: Election of the Speaker and Deputy Speakers

The House of Commons Procedure Committee is launching an inquiry into the procedure governing  the election of the Speaker and the lessons to be learned from the recent experience in implementing these rules for the first time.  The inquiry will also make recommendations on the rules governing the election of the three Deputy Speakers in the light of the Speaker’s proposal of 2 July 2009 that a ballot or ballots should be conducted in the House to choose one Deputy Speaker from the Opposition side and two from the Government side of the House. 

The Committee aims to publish its report shortly after the House returns.  It invites written submissions which should arrive no later than Thursday 3 September 2009.
