FIRST REPORT: COURTS BILL
The Committee will publish its First Report: Courts Bill (HC 526-I, Session 2002-03) at
Friday 6 June. The Report is not a detailed or comprehensive review of the Bill, but aims to identify the main issues for consideration at Second Reading and in Standing Committee. It makes a number of recommendations regarding areas which should be subject to further debate.
The Committee held three public evidence sessions to hear evidence from the Law Society, the Bar Council, the Magistrates' Association, the Justices' Clerks' Society, Professor Lee Bridges, Legal Research Institute, University of Warwick, Nicola Padfield, Institute of Criminology, University of Cambridge, and officials from the Lord Chancellor's Department. The transcripts of these sessions, together with written evidence received by the Committee are published as a second volume to the Report (HC 526-II, Session 2002-03).
