DFID’s Agriculture Policy
In December the Department for International Development (DFID) published its policy paper entitled ‘Agriculture and poverty reduction: unlocking the potential’. DFID is consulting on its proposals and the Committee plans to produce a short report by way of a submission to the consultation (as announced in Press Notice 14, Session 2002-03). The Committee plans to hold the following evidence session on Wednesday 12th May:

Witnesses (NGOs): Dr Christie Peacock, Chief Executive, FARM-Africa; Andrew Jowett, Director, Harvest Help; Colin Williams OBE, Director, International Development Enterprises; and Lea Borkenhagen, Livelihoods Programme Development Manager, Oxfam.

Witnesses (Policy experts): Michael Hubbard, Birmingham University; Colin Poulton, Imperial College; Peter Hazell, Director of the Development Strategy and Governance Division of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), Washington; and Dr Steve Wiggins, Overseas Development Institute.
The Committee plans to hold a further evidence session on Tuesday 25th May:

Witnesses (The role of technological research): Colin Thirtle and John Mumford, Imperial College; George Rothschild, Co-ordinator, Independent Advisory Committee of DFID Renewable Natural Resources Research Strategy (RNRRS) Programmes; and Michael Lipton, Sussex University.
The Committee will be receiving copies of consultation responses sent to DFID. It is not necessary, therefore, to send the Committee copies of submissions already sent to DFID.
