Health Committee

2 November 2006
Session 2005-06

Public Expenditure Inquiry

The Committee's terms of reference include a requirement to examine the expenditure of the Department of Health. For a number of years the Committee has done this by issuing an annual questionnaire to the Department requesting detailed information on a wide range of aspects of its expenditure. This process is followed by oral evidence sessions with officials and then the Secretary of State. The inquiry includes the Departmental Report and PSA targets.

The Health Committee has arranged the following meetings, to be held in public, in connection with its inquiry into NHS Expenditure:

Thursday 23 November 2006 at 10.00 a.m.

David Nicholson, NHS Chief Executive,
Hugh Taylor, Acting Permanent Secretary
Mr Richard Douglas, Director of Finance

Wednesday 29 November 2006 at 10.00 a.m.

Rt Hon Patricia Hewitt MP, Secretary of State for Health
and Department of Health officials

Members of the public and representatives of the press will be admitted to these meetings. Because there are often last minute changes of rooms and meetings may be held either in the Palace of Westminster or Portcullis House, those wishing to attend should check the venue by contacting the House of Commons Public Information office on 020 7219 4272 the day before the meeting.

Please note that the Health Committee is unable to investigate individual cases.

The Health Committee is a Select Committee of the House of Commons. It is appointed under Standing Order No.152 to examine the expenditure, administration and policy of the Department of Health and associated public bodies. The Committee has the power to send for persons, papers and records.
