Health Committee Press Notice

Health Committee to hold Pre-appointment hearing

30 June 2009

Appointment of the Chair of the Food Standards Agency

The Health Committee is announcing that it will hold its second Pre-appointment hearing following the constitutional reform proposals outlined by the Prime Minister last year.

In the White Paper on Constitutional Renewal, Cm 7342-I, the Government proposes that

In line with the principles set out in the Green Paper, pre-appointment hearings will be held for posts which exercise statutory or other powers in relation to protecting the public's rights and interests. In addition, the Government believes that pre-appointment hearings should be held for posts that play a key role in the regulation and administration of the appointments process itself. On 23 January 2008, the Prime Minister announced an initial list of posts that we are proposing should be subject to pre-appointment hearings. (Para 252)

On Friday 26 June the Department of Health announced that the Government's nominee as Chair of the Food Standards Agency is The Rt Hon Lord Rooker. In light of the importance of the post and in order to enhance the understanding within the House of Commons and among the public regarding the appointment process and the suitability of the nominee, the Committee has decided to take evidence from the Baron.

The hearing will take place on Monday 6 July at 5.30 pm in Committee Room 16, Palace of Westminster.

A short report is expected to follow with the Committee's conclusions from the evidence session with Lord Rooker.

The Health Committee is a Select Committee of the House of Commons. It is appointed under Standing Order No.152 to examine the expenditure, administration and policy of the Department of Health and associated public bodies. The Committee has the power to send for persons, papers and records.
