23 July 2004 New inquiry into the Government's Rural Delivery Strategy

The Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee has decided to undertake an inquiry into the Government's Rural Delivery Strategy 2004.

The Committee will examine the Government's Rural Strategy 2004, as set out in the statement of the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to the House of Commons on 21 July 2004. In particular, the Committee will consider:

  • the proposal to establish an integrated agency

  • the proposed streamlining of rural, agricultural and environmental funding schemes

  • the delivery mechanisms for the strategy, including the IT strategy that underpins it, its environmental impact and its lines of accountability, and

  • the extent to which the strategy incorporates the recommendations of Lord Haskins' rural delivery review, published in October 2003.

The Committee invites all interested parties to submit written evidence which addresses these matters. The deadline for the submission of evidence is Friday, 17 September 2004. Please read closely the guidelines about the format of submissions, set out below.

The text of the Secretary of State's oral statement can be found at: http://www.defra.gov.uk/news/latest/2004/210704ruralstrat.htm

Evidence should be submitted in Word or WordPerfect formats, and should be sent by e-mail to combsl@parliament.uk. The body of the e-mail must include a contact name, telephone number and postal address. The e-mail should also make clear who the submission is from.

Submissions should be as brief as possible, and certainly no more than 3,000 words. Paragraphs should be numbered for ease of reference, and the document should include a brief executive summary. Those submitting evidence are reminded that evidence should be original work, not previously published or circulated elsewhere. Once submitted no public use should be made of it, but those wishing to publish their evidence before it is published by the Committee are invited to contact the Clerk of the Committee to obtain permission to do so.
