16 February 2004 Sites of Special Scientific Interest: New Inquiry Announced

The Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee has decided to undertake an inquiry into the protection of Sites of Special Scientific Interest.

The terms of reference of the inquiry are:

"The Committee will examine progress made towards achieving Defra's Public Service Agreement (PSA) target that by 2010 95 per cent of all nationally important wildlife sites should be in 'favourable condition'. It will examine the role played by various agencies in meeting the target, including especially English Nature and local authorities, and will determine what changes are need to ensure that the target will be met."

The Committee invites all interested parties to submit written evidence which addresses these terms of reference. The deadline for the submission of evidence is Friday  12 March 2004.
