20 July 2005 Rt Hon Michael Jack MP elected as Chairman

The members of the newly-appointed Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee met for the first time on Wednesday 20 July, and unanimously elected Rt Hon Michael Jack MP as Chairman. Mr Jack, who chaired the previous Committee between 2003 and 2005, said:

"I am delighted that the Committee has chosen to re-elect me as Chairman of the Committee. I am also pleased that the Committee has indicated that it wishes to look at aspects of the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy, starting with an inquiry into the proposed changes to the EU's sugar regime".

Details of the Committee's inquiry into the sugar regime will be announced in a separate press release shortly. The Committee also decided to undertake its usual scrutiny of the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs' Departmental Annual Report. Details of this inquiry will be announced in due course.

1. Rt Hon Michael Jack has been Conservative MP for Fylde since 1987, and served as a Minister in the Department for Social Security, the Home Office, MAFF and HM Treasury.  He was a member of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee between 2001 and 2005, and Chairman from 2003.
