Session 2007-08, 22 November 2007
MPs TO PROBE MOD’s DETERIORATING PERFORMANCE AGAINST ITS TARGETS
At the Defence Committee’s evidence session on 13 November the Chairman told the MoD’s Permanent Under Secretary that the Committee was “distinctly angry” that the MoD’s written evidence for the Committee’s inquiry into the MoD’s Annual Report and Accounts 2006-07 had been received only the day before. The Committee decided to postpone the evidence session as it considered that the changes in the MoD’s performance set out in the written evidence were “so significant” that the Committee needed time to consider them.
The MoD’s performance against its targets, which has deteriorated sharply, the recently announced Streamlining exercise (which will result in a 25% cut in Head Office staff), and the implications of the Spending Review will be among the issues to be covered when the Defence Committee takes evidence from the MoD’s Permanent Secretary.
This will take place on
Wednesday 28 November at 10.30 am in Committee Room 16, Palace of Westminster (room subject to change). The witnesses will be:
Ministry of Defence
Mr Bill Jeffrey CB, Permanent Under Secretary of State
Mr Trevor Woolley CB, Finance Director
The Committee would welcome written evidence on any of the issues raised by the Ministry of Defence’s Annual Report and Accounts (published in July as HC Paper No. 697) by the end of December.
Written evidence should be sent by e-mail to email@example.com or by post to the address above.
NOTE FOR EDITORS:
The Committee was nominated on 13 July 2005. The Defence Committee is appointed by the House of Commons to examine the expenditure, administration, and policy of the Ministry of Defence and its associated public bodies.
