Evidence Session

Evidence session to be held in Edinburgh into Medical Care for the Armed Forces

The House of Commons Defence Committee will visit the Scottish Parliament tomorrow to take evidence in its inquiry into Medical Care for the Armed Forces.

MPs will travel to Edinburgh to hear from the Royal College of Psychiatrists and officials from the Scottish Government as it continues to look at the way the Ministry of Defence and the NHS provide healthcare for Service personnel, their families and veterans. Before the meeting, the Committee will visit medical facilities at Redford Barracks, including a Regional Rehabilitation Unit.

The Committee has already taken evidence in Birmingham as part of its inquiry, and has visited medical units in the West Midlands, Surrey and at sea in the Solent, as well as on operations in Iraq. Today the Committee will visit the headquarters of 2nd Medical Brigade at Strensall in Yorkshire.

The Committee Chairman, Rt Hon James Arbuthnot MP, said: “We are delighted to be able to take evidence in Scotland and are grateful to the Scottish Parliament for opening its facilities to us. The responsibilities of the Ministry of Defence-which it is our role to scrutinise-cover the whole of the UK; we have already held evidence sessions across England and in Wales during this Parliament, and it is good that we are now doing so in Scotland too.”
