Government responds to the Defence Committee Report on the Strategic Nuclear Deterrent White Paper
The Government has today made an interim response to the Defence Committee's report on The Future of the UK's Strategic Nuclear Deterrent: the White Paper (Ninth Report of Session 2006-07, HC 225-I).
The response provides some additional information which the Committee said should be provided in advance of the debate in the House of Commons on Wednesday 14 March.
The response provides additional information on
The Trident D5 missile life extension programme
The UK's nuclear doctrine, and how this fits with NATO
The scale of the UK's nuclear deterrent.

Hard copies of the response will not be made available.
The Government has said that it will make a full response to the Committee's report in due course.
The Rt Hon James Arbuthnot, Chairman of the Defence Committee, says "I welcome the Government's interim response to our report. This does not answer all our questions but it puts some helpful additional information into the public domain in advance of Wednesday's debate."
