Publication of Government Response on the Ministry of Defence Annual Report and Accounts 2004-05

The Defence Committee is publishing the Government’s Response to its report on the Ministry of Defence’s Annual Report and Accounts 2004-05 (Seventh Special Report of Session 2005-06, Ministry of Defence Annual Report and Accounts 2004-05: Government Response to the Committee’s Sixth Report of Session 2005-06, HC 1293) on Thursday 22 June at 11.00 am.

The Committee’s report on the Ministry of Defence Annual Report and Accounts 2004-05  was published on 20 April 2006 as HC 822.

The Government response welcomed the Committee’s report and noted that:

  • Action was being taken to address the manning shortfall in the Royal Navy and Royal Marines and to reduce the shortfall in medical personnel.

  • Only £280 million of the reported £400 million savings in logistics costs could be substantiated. There will be more robust audit trails for the efficiency achievements reported in the future.

  • Data on the performance of Defence Agencies in the Annual Report and Accounts 2006-06 will be improved to reflect the Committee’s comments.

A lessons learned review is to be held into the Landing Ship Dock (Auxiliary) programme - a programme for four ships which has experienced substantial cost increases. A review has been undertaken into the £147 million loss relating to a building at AWE Aldermaston and the lessons learned have been promulgated.

The Government still expects the MoD’s Annual Report and Accounts 2005-06 to be published before the Summer recess.
