Publication of Special Report

Publication of Special Report

The Defence Committee will be publishing the Government’s Response to its Report on the Future Carrier and Joint Combat Aircraft Programmes as a Special Report on Thursday 2 March at 11.00 am. This will be published as the Committee’s Second Special Report of Session 2005-06, HC 926.

The Chairman of the Defence Committee, Rt Hon James Arbuthnot MP, said:

“We welcome the Government Response, although we remain concerned that there are a number of key issues on both the Future Carrier and Joint Strike Fighter programmes which are still to be addressed.

It is likely to be some time before the In-Service Dates for the Future Carriers are fixed. The Chief Executive of BAE Systems told the Defence Committee on 28 February that as the company leading the programme, they did not know when they would be able to give an In-Service Date or indeed a budgetary cost for the programme, although he hoped they would have a better view in the next 18 months.

On the Joint Strike Fighter, the Chief Executive of BAE Systems also told us on 28 February that he believed that the Joint Strike Fighter would proceed, but suggested that there should be an investigation into navalising Typhoon as a fall back solution. We look to MoD to give proper consideration to this suggestion.

Given the importance of these two programmes, we will continue to keep a close watch on their progress”.
