Publication of Adult Learning Inspectorate Report: Safer Training

The Rt Hon Bruce George MP, Chairman of the House of Commons Defence Committee, today welcomed the publication of the Adult Learning Inspectorate’s (ALI) report into managing the risks to the welfare of recruits in the British armed services.

The ALI report comes a week after the Defence Committee’s own report into Duty of Care in the Armed Forces.

Commenting on the ALI report Mr George said:

“I very much welcome the Adult Learning Inspectorate’s comprehensive study of training across the Services, coming as it does just a week after the Defence Committee’s substantial report on duty of care in the Armed Forces. Like them we found a number of important improvements had been made in recent years, but as both reports point out more still remains to be done. Faced now with these two authoritative reports, MoD must recognise that urgent action is required and I look to them to implement our recommendations.”

1. The Adult Learning Inspectorate (ALI) was commissioned by Rt Hon Adam Ingram, MP, Minster of State for the Armed Forces, on 24 May “to conduct independent inspection and oversight of the Armed Forces’ training establishments”. The inspections which began in the autumn of 2004 would “focus on initial training across all three Services and… look specifically at care and welfare”.
