27 October 2007: For Immediate Release

Devolution: A Decade On

2007 marks the tenth anniversary of the devolution referenda which resulted in the creation of the Scottish Parliament and the National Assembly for Wales. The impact of devolution on the politics and governance of the constituent parts of the UK where it has been implemented cannot be underestimated, and has been the focus of much political and academic interest. However, asymmetric devolution has also had a considerable impact on the centre, and in particular on the practices and procedures of Westminster and Whitehall. A decade on, one of the key issues that remains to be resolved is the English question: how, in the UK post devolution,‚ should England be governed and how should legislation‚ for England be handled?‚

Rt Hon Alan Beith MP, Chairman of the Committee, said that during the course of it's inquiry the Committee will "look very carefully at the issues and evidence around these crucial questions. Arrangements for the future governance of the different parts of the UK will have a very real impact on the lives of ordinary people. Consideration of the issues around the governance of England is long overdue, but we must get this right."

The Committee will hold its first oral evidence session into its inquiry Devolution: A Decade On on Tuesday 13 November.

Details of the oral evidence session are as follows:

Tuesday 13 November in The Grimond Room, Portcullis House
