The Committee is appointed by the House of Commons to examine the expenditure, policy and administration of the Department for Constitutional Affairs. As of 9 May the responsibilities of the Department for Constitutional Affairs were transferred to the new Ministry of Justice.

From the 6 November 2007 the Constitutional Affairs Committee will be renamed the Justice Committee (JSC) to reflect recent changes in the Machinery of Government.
