A STATEMENT FROM EDWARD LEIGH MP
CHAIRMAN OF THE COMMITTEE OF PUBLIC ACCOUNTS
National Audit Office report: Leaving the Services
Our Armed Forces are trained to cope with anything that is thrown at them, so perhaps it isn’t too surprising that most who leave the Services settle back into civilian life without too much difficulty.
Obviously, some will experience problems. Most worrying are the problems the younger leavers and those who leave early go through. These are the people who are more vulnerable. And the unemployment rates seem to confirm this: one in six of those who left the Services early are out of work.
The MoD has pretty good support systems in place. I expect the department to heed this report and plug the gaps where necessary to ensure that, in all instances, the best guidance, advice and assistance is made available to those service men and women who need it.
