Business and Enterprise Committee

4 June 2008 (PN 42)

Following the publication of its report After the Network Change Programme: the future of the post office network, the Business and Enterprise Committee will be taking evidence from Postwatch and Royal Mail next week as follows:

Details are as follows:

Date and time: Tuesday 10 June, 10:30 am
Location: Room 8,  Committee Corridor, Palace of Westminster
Witnesses: Howard Webber,  Chief Executive, Postwatch
Alan Cook, Managing Director, Paula Vennells, Network Director, Post Office Ltd.

Topics likely to be covered include:

• Outreach
• The Closure Process
• The interrelationship between mail services and the post office network

Peter Luff, Chairman of the Committee said:

“Our report identified the very real risk that the closure of post offices doesn’t end when the official closure programme finishes, with conflicting lines from the Government and Post Office Ltd. on the number guaranteed to stay open. There are also wider issues such as the role of post offices in providing access to services of general economic interest, and the relationship between the post office network and mail services, particularly those subject to the Universal Service Obligation. We touched on these in our recent report: we now want to explore them further, drawing on Members’ experience of the closure programmes in their own areas. ”

As the location of meetings are subject to last minute changes, those wishing to attend should check the venue by contacting the House of Commons Public Information Office on 020 7219 4272 on the day before the hearing.
