Brexit Secretary asked for full text of the Government’s Irish border

The EU Select Committee has written to the Secretary of State for Exiting the EU to request the full legal text of the proposed amended Protocol on Ireland / Northern Ireland, and with a number of questions on the content of the proposal.

Background

The EU Committee will take evidence from Rt Hon Stephen Barclay MP on the 21 October 2019. Ahead of this session, the EU Committee has written to the Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union on the 4 October 2019 to request the full legal text of the Government's proposed amended protocol on Ireland / Northern Ireland.

The Committee also sought answers to a number of questions, including:

  • The EU's response to the proposals and whether formal negotiations on the proposals have started
  • How the proposed customs checks will work in practice
  • The Government's assessment of the economic impact for both large business and SMEs of the imposition of customs controls on the island of Ireland.
