US steel and aluminium tariffs

On 24 May 2018, the EU External Affairs Sub-Committee considered the EU Commission's response to the introduction of tariffs on steel and aluminium exported to the US.

The Committee decided to hold the document under scrutiny and write a letter to the Rt Hon Greg Hands MP, Minister of State for Trade Policy.

The Committee asked:

  • Whether the UK would continue to apply tariff countermeasures during the transition period after the UK leaves the EU and what the process for this would be.
  • What consideration has been given to how the UK would continue to implement these tariffs, should the EU countermeasures continue to be in place after the end of the transition period.
  • Whether the UK Government will seek to apply the second set of countermeasures, which only apply from March 2021, after the transition period, and what role the new Trade Remedies Authority would play in doing so.

The Committee agreed to clear this item from scrutiny at its meeting on 21 June 2018.
