Economic Partnership Agreement between the EU and Japan

On 24 May 2018, the EU External Affairs Sub-Committee considered the proposal for a Council Decision on the signing and conclusion of the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA)between the European Union and Japan.

The Committee agreed to hold the Council Decision under scrutiny and write a letter to the Rt Hon Greg Hands MP, Minister of State for Trade Policy.

The Committee asked:

  • Which of the elements contained in the EPA would the Government seek to replicate in a bilateral FTA with Japan after Brexit; and
  • What assessment the Government has undertaken of the WTO compatibility of its plans, and what the Government's view is n this.

The Committee agreed to clear this item from scrutiny on 21 June 2018.
