Our report is not the end of the story, more like the beginning in fact. There is to be a white paper – essentially a discussion paper produced by the Government – published soon and we hope our findings are taken into account in this and then again in the communications Bill which we expect the Government to put before Parliament
Also, the Government have to produce a formal written response to our report within two months, saying what they agree with, what they don’t and why. We hope there is more of the former and less of the latter.
These are the formal arrangements, but beyond these, we hope that the ideas in our report and all the opinions that were put to us during our inquiry prompt an informed and wide-ranging public debate about the future of our media.
