The Work and Pensions Committee publishes responses to its queries on "dubious" employment practices at two gyms, PureGym and Gym Group. The Committee is still awaiting a response to similar queries put to Embody Fitness.
Self-serving justifications for dubious practices
Commenting on the companies' responses, Rt Hon Frank Field MP, Chair of the Committee, said:
"Unfortunately for both these businesses, repeating circular, self-serving justifications for dubious employment practices over and over does not magically bring them into line with the law.
Unfortunately for their workers, the dice are loaded entirely in favour of companies willing to shamelessly exploit them: the only recourse is through the courts or whistle-blowing to a select committee.
These companies know full well there is little to fear from the current regulatory regime and they will only face a proper reckoning when that is changed.
The simple legislative measures we have proposed with our colleagues on the BEIS Committee would go a long way towards redressing the balance, and these businesses should be on notice now that we have taken the first steps toward seeing them enacted."
