The House of Commons, Women and Equalities Committee (WEC) is looking for three specialist advisers for its sub-inquiries into coronavirus:
These are part-time, flexible roles, which will be to supplement existing internal expertise, providing advice to staff and MPs (for example, making input to briefing documents, the strategic direction of the inquiry and advising on aspects of final reports).
The Women and Equalities Committee examines the work of the Government Equalities Office. It holds Government to account on equality law and policy, including the Equality Act 2010 and cross Government activity on equalities. It also scrutinises the Equality and Human Rights Commission. Inquires carried out by the previous Committee include Sexual harassment in the workplace, Health and social care and LGBT communities and Disability and the built environment. The Committee is chaired by Caroline Nokes MP.
The roles and eligibility
We are looking for motivated and confident specialist advisers who can work well within a small team. For each role, we are looking for individuals who have:
- The ability to explain complex information clearly and succinctly;
- Ability to provide feedback and comment on a variety of draft written products, using research/academic skills to ensure robust analysis of evidence;
- Experience of working with policymakers and interacting with Parliament, charities, think tanks and/or other governmental bodies; and
- Ability to advise the Committee Chair, Members and staff on issues within the sector
We are also looking for the following specific skills and expertise:
Unequal impact? Coronavirus and BAME people
Proven expertise in the subject of data collection and analysis, with particular specialisms in ANY of the following areas:
- An understanding of the disproportionate levels of BAME hospital admissions and the disproportionate mortality rate;
- Knowledge of the housing inequalities BAME people face, for example, overcrowding and poorer housing conditions;
- Expertise of the ways in which BAME people face inequalities in employment and the economic realities of BAME people especially for those experiencing in-work poverty and a limited social security net; and/or
- Expert knowledge of data sets and how data collection and data reporting can be improved to better measure the impacts of coronavirus on BAME people.
Unequal impact? Coronavirus, disability and access to services
Proven expertise in the subject of disability discrimination law and its application in relation to disabled people’s access to public health information, food, health (COVID-19 and non-COVID-19) and social care services and education during the pandemic, including:
- the Equality Act and the application of “reasonable adjustments”;
- the requirements of the Public Sector Equality Duty;
- the Accessible Information Standard; and
- expert knowledge of the Coronavirus Act, particularly provisions affecting duties to assess and provide for disabled people’s social care, mental health and educational needs during the pandemic, the relevant reporting and monitoring requirements and mechanisms for the extension, suspension or repeal of these emergency provisions.
Unequal impact? Coronavirus and the gendered economic impact
Proven expertise in the subject of economic policy and the labour market, with particular experience/subject matter expertise in the following areas:
- Discrimination law and remedies under the Equality Act;
- Gender inequality in the context of economic policy, business and employment;
- The ways in which men and women face intersecting inequalities in the labour market, the reasons for, and the solutions to, such intersecting inequalities; and
- Experience of engaging with a wide range of stakeholders in the field(s) of gender equality and economic policy
These posts will run from the beginning of September for up to 9 months. Advisers are expected to work no more than two days in a week on a flexible basis, although in practical terms the workload may be substantially less. A daily honorarium is paid to advisers on the basis of an established scale (further information available on application).

- The amount of time you can commit to the inquiry; and
- Your ability to take on work at short notice if required.
If your application is successful, you will be asked to declare any interests. These will be published on the Committee’s website. Your declaration of interests should include anything that a reasonable person might consider could influence the advice you give the Committee. This could include, for instance, a relevant financial interest, active membership of a relevant campaign group or political party, or the involvement of a close family member in the area of specialism. Declared interests from successful applicants will be published.
