Facts behind the gender pay gap examined

Women and Equalities Committee takes evidence on myths and facts about the gender pay gap, which the latest ONS figures show stands at 19.2%.

Committee Chair Maria Miller said:
"We recognise that the Government is keen to narrow the pay gap. But it is not doing enough, especially for women over 40. More robust action is needed. In our first session for this inquiry, we will looking carefully at the evidence base, with the help of some of the country’s leading experts. We’re expecting to see some myths debunked, and start finding out what needs to be done to tackle this problem which continues to affect so many women."
Purpose of session
The first session of their gender pay gap inquiry calls on witnesses to scrutinise the causes of the pay gap and what can be done to address it. This is followed by evidence on the economic and business implications of reducing the gender pay gap.
This session focuses on the following issues surrounding the gender pay gap:
- Is it the same as equal pay?
- Is the gap really narrowing?
- Is the greatest gap to be found amongst low paid workers?
- Can it be blamed on direct discrimination?
- Will it solve itself as inequality steadily declines?
