Chair comments on whilsteblowers at Barclays

11 April 2017

Rt Hon. Andrew Tyrie MP, Chairman of the Treasury Committee comments on the news about whistleblowers at Barclays.

Chair's Comments

"The FCA and PRA, between them, are now investigating both Barclays, and its Chief Executive, in separate investigations. The Treasury Committee will examine their conclusions, and the process by which they arrive at them, very carefully.

These parallel investigations will mark a test case for the whistleblowing provisions introduced by the regulators in response to the recommendations of the Parliamentary Commission on Banking Standards. It will also be a test case for whether the newly introduced Senior Managers' and Certification Regimes are capable of providing meaningful scrutiny and accountability of financial institutions.

Parliament has tightened the rules and empowered the independent regulators. Now they need to get on with the job."
