MPs support appointment to Chair of Committee on Standards in Public Life

11 October 2018

The Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee publishes its report Appointment of Lord Evans of Weardale as Chair of the Committee on Standards in Public Life, (CSPL) supporting his appointment following a pre-appointment hearing on Tuesday 9 October 2018.

However, PACAC is concerned that, while Lord Evans is an eminently qualified candidate and clearly personally committed to increasing standards in public life, the CSPL’s chairs have all been male. Indeed, all the candidates recommended by the Cabinet Office and scrutinised by PACAC in pre-appointment hearings since 2015 have been male.

This does not reflect the Government’s commitments to increasing diversity in senior public appointments. PACAC has therefore asked Cabinet Office Ministers to demonstrate that the Government is actively seeking to make appointments from the widest possible pool of candidates.
