Committee Chair: Immediate compensation payments to Troubles victims ‘moral imperative’

02 June 2020

Simon Hoare has urged the UK and Northern Ireland Governments to work together to ensure compensation payments to victims and survivors of the Troubles begin immediately.

The Troubles Permanent Disablement Payment Scheme had been due to open on 29 May but is yet to pay out any money owing to a dispute about how the scheme is to be funded.

Describing the current situation as “deeply regrettable” in a letter to the Northern Ireland Secretary, Mr Hoare, who chairs the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee, added that victims “should not be made to endure further delay”.
