Northern Ireland's livestock and dairy sector examined
20 June 2018
The Northern Ireland Affairs Committee hears from the livestock and dairy farming sector.
Wednesday 20 June in Committee Room 15, Palace of Westminster
- Ian Stevenson, Chief Executive, Livestock and Meat Commission
- Dr Mike Johnston, Northern Ireland Director, Dairy UK
- Conall Donnelly, Chief Executive, Northern Ireland Meat Exporters Association
- Dr Simon Doherty, Junior Vice President, British Veterinary Association
Purpose of the session
Livestock and livestock products make up the vast majority of Northern Ireland’s agricultural produce, accounting for over £1.75bn of output in 2017. In Northern Ireland the sector is characterised by high levels of reliance on Direct Payments under the Common Agricultural Policy and deeply integrated cross-border supply chains and trade. The Committee will examine how future agricultural policy can continue to support the sector after Brexit, as it seeks to develop new and sustainable business models, preserve its high standards of animal health and welfare, and capitalise on new trading opportunities.
