Day-to-day running of prisons examined

The Justice Committee holds its seventh evidence session as part of its inquiry into Prison Population 2022: planning for the future.

The purpose of this session is to examine the current and future pressures on the prison system from the Inspectorate’s perspective, including

  • the impact of the strategic and operational approach of the Ministry and HMPPS on the day-to-day running of prisons, including measures to improve safety, decency and rehabilitation
  • the use of the Urgent Notification process and other mechanisms for monitoring prison performance
  • the maintenance and modernisation of the prison estate.
