The Government has announced by written statement that the criminal courts charge will not be imposed on convicted offenders as from 24 December 2015.
Bob Neill MP, Chair of the Justice Committee, said:
"We very much welcome the Government’s decision to scrap the criminal courts charge. This is the recommendation the Justice Committee made in our recent report on the charge.
We arrived at that view on the basis of the overwhelming evidence we received about problems with the way the charge has been working, and it is good that the Secretary of State is willing to respond so swiftly to take account of the inquiry we carried out and the evidence submitted to us. We will watch with interest the review which Michael Gove has announced into the whole panoply of financial impositions on offenders."
