The Home Affairs Committee launches an inquiry into the migration crisis facing Europe and the situation in Calais.
Rt Hon Keith Vaz MP, Chair of the Committee, said:
"We are in the midst of a migration crisis across Europe and the Mediterranean with people in their thousands risking their lives to flee war, terrorism and instability.
This summer has seen the crisis reach its peak, with as many as 2000 people risking their lives each night to break into the Channel Tunnel in Calais, followed by a UK-French agreement signed by the Home Secretary last week to increase security.
While changes have been made to stem the flow of migrants in Calais, the crisis will inevitably spill over into other ports across the north of Europe. We must develop a coherent strategy with our European counterparts to ensure that action is taken before migrants reach these ports."
