The Education Committee announced the publication of its first report of session 2015-16 'The role of Regional Schools Commissioners' for Wednesday 20 January 2016.
Background of the report
Regional Schools Commissioners (RSCs) were appointed in 2014 with responsibility for approving and monitoring academies and free schools in their region.
The report investigates issues around the expanding role of RSCs, their resources, capacity, impact and accountability. The Education and Adoption Bill, currently going through Parliament, envisages an expanded role for Regional School Commissioners, giving RSCs greater powers to intervene in schools (both council-maintained and academies) that are deemed to be struggling.
