Charity Commission leadership questioned by Committee

29 November 2017

The Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee hears from William Shawcross, the chair of the Charity Commission and Helen Stephenson, its chief executive.

Wednesday 29 November 2017, Committee Room 6, Palace of Westminster

At 10.30am

  • William Shawcroft, out-going Chair, Charity Commission
  • Helen Stephenson, Chief Executive, Charity Commission

Focus of the session

MPs review progress on strengthening the Commission’s role as a regulator in the wake of a number of recent controversies, including its plans to help restore trust in the charity sector following the high profile collapse of Kids Company.
As William Shawcross is the outgoing Chair, MPs use the opportunity to ask him about potential challenges for the incoming chair who then appear for a pre-appointment hearing with the Committee in early December.  This is the first time the Committee has taken evidence on the Charity Commission since it took on responsibility for scrutinising the work of the Office for Civil Society when it moved to DCMS in 2016. Previously the Office had been scrutinised as part of Cabinet Office by the Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee.
