Silver Jubilee Addresses, 1977

The year of the Queen's Silver Jubilee, 1977, marked Elizabeth II's twenty five years on the throne and a high point both for her and the country. To begin the Jubilee celebrations in the United Kingdom, the Queen came to Parliament in May where she received Addresses from both Houses in Westminster Hall. In this picture, the Lord Chancellor, Lord Elwyn Jones, presents the Queen with the Loyal Address of the House of Lords.

At the culmination of the Silver Jubilee celebrations in June there was a spontaneous outburst of popular feeling. Bonfires were lit and thousands of street parties took place, as the Jubilee saw the most widespread display of public affection towards the Queen since her Coronation.
