Sir Benjamin Stone was concerned about the potential monopolisation of such an institution dedicated to scientific research and testing, which could have had a detrimental effect on smaller companies and have resulted in a decrease in competition between them. This had links to his interest in the science and development of photography and led to him becoming known as the ‘Knight of the Camera’.
