Highlighted here is a selection of images charting the rich history of Westminster Hall. Westminster Hall has witnessed nearly 1000 years of the Nation’s history. Built by William Rufus in 1097-99 it has served a number of purposes over the centuries. It was the meeting place for the Law Courts until the late 19th Century and for important state trials the whole hall functioned as a law court. From earliest times it played host to lavish royal banquets; the last coronation banquet held in the hall was for George IV in 1821. During the 20th Century Kings and Queens have lain in state in the hall.
