  • Catalogue number: WOA 1665
  • Description: This watercolour by Robert William Billings shows the ruined interior of the cloisters of St. Stephen\'s Chapel after the fire that ravaged Parliament in 1834. Like the cloister of old St. Paul\'s Cathedral (itself destroyed by fire in 1666), it was a double height perpendicular gothic masterpiece. At the time of the fire it was part of the Speaker\'s residence, with the upper cloister being used from 1808 until the fire as the Speaker\'s Gallery. Although the cloisters was badly damaged by the fire it was restored by Charles Barry in his design for the new Palace. Though bombed during the Second World War, it still survives today, buried deep inside the Houses of Parliament.

Acquisition: Sir L. Harmsworth gift 1929.
