  • Description: John Bratby, the English painter, writer and teacher studied at Kingston College of Art and later the Royal college of Art. Bratbys work is recognisable by its harsh realistic style with a generous application of paint in vibrant colours. A strong interest in social realism bought Bratby into contact with artists of, what was dubbed by critics of the time, the 'Kitchen sink school'(also known as the Beaux Arts Quartet) with a common intention to depict the dull reality of a working-class domestic environment. However, Bratby's strong use of colour and the middle-class he was surrounded by is reflected in his work and set him apart.

Cyril Smith, Liberal Democratic MP to Rochdale from 1972 until his retirement in 1992.
