  • Description: Sir Alec Douglas-Home served as Foreign Secretary in the Macmillan administration, resigning his peerage as 14th Earl of Home to become Prime Minister from 1963 to 1964.Home steered a prudent and confident course, regaining considerable ground for the Conservative government who had been in power for a dozen years but, a year after his appointment, Labour won the general election. Retiring from the Commons in March 1974 he returned to the Lords as lord Home of Hirsel.

    This portrait is composed from sketches executed a few years earlier for Mee's painting of Lord Home as part of the series 'British Eminencies'.
