Catalogue number:
WOA 1669
Description:
The interior of Westminster Hall during the fire of 1834.
As the ancient medieval buildings of the old Place of Westminster were being consumed by flames, all efforts were directed towards saving the Great Hall. The tall thick stone walls, provided an excellent barrier against the spread of fire, but the late fourteenth century oak roof timbers were in great peril and were saved only by repeated dousing with water. Amidst this frenzied activity, the six Kings in their niches can just be seen on either side of the tall Gothic window on the South wall. The watercolour was presented to the collection by the Fire Protection Association, 1972.
