Open House

Open House weekend takes place every year and gives the public the chance to see inside over 600 architecturally significant buildings which are not generally freely open to all.

It aims to raise awareness of great buildings and invites people to understand, explore and appreciate architecture in London. More information about Open House can be obtained from Open House London (external website)    

2013

Open House Weekend 2013 will take place on 21 - 22 September and buildings within the Parliamentary estate will again feature.

Saturday 21 September

The atrium and first floor of Portcullis House will be open from 10am - 5pm. Throughout the day visitors will be able to:

  • View the modern architecture, contemporary art collection and first floor committee rooms
  • See tapestry conservation work
  • Attend talks given by a range of experts including architects, engineers, archivists and clock mechanics
  • Visit stands and exhibitions, and engage with staff from various departments
  • Purchase light refreshments, books and souvenirs

Sunday 22 September

Westminster Hall through to Central Lobby will be open will be open from 10am - 5pm.  Again, throughout the day visitors will be able to:

  • View architecture dating back as far as 1097
  • See current stone and encaustic tile conservation work
  • Join a guided tour of the Chapel of St Mary Undercroft
  • Join a guided tour of Westminster Hall
  • Attend talks given by a range of experts including historians, conservators and clock mechanics
  • Visit stands and exhibitions, and engage with staff from various departments
  • Purchase light refreshments, books and souvenirs 

For the first time this year we will also be running some outdoor events including tours of Parliament Square conducted by Blue Badge Guides.
