Clock Tower tour

The Clock Tower is the name of the famous tower of Parliament - more popularly known as Big Ben. UK residents can arrange a tour through their local MP or a member of the House of Lords. Space is extremely limited and early booking, 3-6 months in advanced, is strongly recommended. Regretfully Clock Tower tours are not available to overseas visitors.

Isn't that Big Ben?

Yes. Although often referred to as Big Ben, this is actually the nickname of the bell housed within the Clock Tower - and Big Ben's official name is the Great Bell.

The tour

Tours are at set times of 9.15am, 11.15am and 2.15pm Monday – Friday, (except Bank Holidays) with a max number of 16 visitors per tour.

Visitors to the Clock Tower will be shown up by a guide, who will outline the history of the tower, the bell and how the most accurate public clock in the world works.

Tours of the tower are free,  no charge should be applied by a third party. They are open to UK permanent residents who have requested a visit through their local MP or a member of the House of Lords. The tours should not be used for fund raising activities, i.e. raffle, auction or personal gifts.

Children under the age of 11 are not permitted. Tours for overseas visitors are not available.

Visitors aged between 11 – 18, must be accompanied by an adult.

School groups are required to have a minimum of two adults within the group.

Book in advance

Please note that tours of the Clock Tower must be booked well in advance. It is not possible to request a tour at short notice or to join one on the day.

Where do I go on the day?

Visitors should gather at the meeting point in the foyer of Portcullis House reception area fifteen minutes before their tour begins. It is essential that visitors are prompt as late comers are unable to join the tour once it has started.

A tour takes about 75 minutes and visitors should feel confident about making the climb and descent. It is essential that those wishing to join a tour read our  health and safety information before booking a tour.
