Listen to the Commons Librarian

Welcome to the Virtual tour of the House of Commons Library.

I am John Pullinger, Director of Information Services and Librarian.

Your visit will introduce you to the magnificent suite of rooms designed by Barry and Pugin in the mid 19th Century and still used for the purpose for which it was created.

These special rooms, situated so close to the chamber of the House of Commons, are a symbol of the value placed by the House on knowledge and learning. Our success in providing services in the 21st century depends on the same two ingredients embodied in this space.

Our service is special. We offer Members a unique opportunity to be well-informed. In books and in a quiet sanctuary for reading and reflection but also in a team of experts offering research, information and analysis on all aspects of a Member€™s work. Our service is delivered close to where the Members are. In closeness to the chamber but also in availability wherever a Member is and whenever the service is required on the web and over the telephone as well as through personal contact.

All our work for individual Members in support of their parliamentary duties is provided on an impartial and confidential basis. It is in great demand. We can count 75 per cent of Members as regular customers and only a tiny number are not currently on our books. The most rewarding aspect of our work is the personal service we give to them.

We are proud of our Library and its services to our Members and we hope that you will enjoy your visit to it.
