In the period October-December 2012, 974,000 young people aged 16-24 were unemployed, up 11,000 on the previous quarter but down 59,000 on the previous year.

Over the period October to December 2012, the North East had the highest unemployment rate, at 9.7% of the economically active population. The lowest rate over the same period was 5.5% in the South West.

The Library has changed the methodology used to calculate the claimant rates shown in the monthly Unemployment by Constituency research paper, following the publication of new 2011 Census data for parliamentary constituencies. This note provides details of the changes.
20.02.2013Unemployment - International Comparisons: Economic Indicators page
The UK harmonised unemployment rate for Q3 2012 was 7.8%. This was below the rate of France and Italy (10.3% and 10.7%, respectively, in Q3) but above that of Germany (5.3%).
