| Levels of public spending on education in the UK have reached new record levels in real terms in each year since 1996-97. Spending as a proportion of GDP in 2009-10 was the highest since the mid-1970s and could be higher still in 2010-11. Public expenditure on education as a proportion of GDP is still below the level in some EU states and total (public and private) spending was below the OECD average in 2007. The data included in this note covers actual spending to 2008-09 and estimated spending for 2009-10 and the last Government's plans for spending in 2010-11.
