DateDescription
21.02.2012Oil Prices
Oil prices peaked at almost $150 Dollars a barrel in July 2008 and fell sharply in the second half of 2008 as the global financial crisis hit. Prices have increased steadily since then, despite fairly weak economic growth and jumped further in early 2011 following political unrest across the Middle East. Sustained high prices in 2011 meant the annual average price was above that seen in 2008 and the highest in real terms since 1864. Recent spot Sterling prices of oil have been above their 2008 peak.
06.02.2012Chilcot Inquiry: an update
The Iraq Inquiry, chaired by Sir John Chilcot, was originally expected to have reported by now but the broad scope of the inquiry and the amount of evidence have led to delays in publication, which is now not expected until summer 2012 at the earliest. This note provides a brief update on progress.
15.11.2011Investigatory inquiries and the Inquiries Act 2005
The 2005 Act provides a statutory framework for inquiries into matters of public concern, but there are alternative ways of establishing inquiries of this nature. The various forms of inquiry are examined in this note.
26.09.2011The cost of international military operations
This note provides a summary of the estimated and actual costs of the international military operations in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya.
